Scope of work

The design consultant will transform technical manuscript data into a functional, pocket-sized identification tool for law enforcement and conservation officers. The primary objective is to create a layout that simplifies the accurate identification of parrot species during field seizures and legal proceedings. The consultant will focus on high-utility design, ensuring that anatomical details and legal protocols are immediately accessible under field conditions.

Additional details

  • Species profile layouts: Design approximately 22+ detailed species profiles (covering Indonesian and Philippine parrots). Each profile must integrate high-resolution imagery with specific anatomical callouts (e.g., beak shape, plumage patches).
  • Technical visuals: Create layout templates for bird topography diagrams and visual identification keys for specific groups, such as Cockatoos, Lories, and Lorikeets.
  • Information formatting: Convert dense legal tables (RA 9147, CITES) and step-by-step emergency encounter protocols into clean, readable formats.
  • Field navigation: Develop a tabbed or color-coded system for quick navigation within the physical guide.

Timeline

  • Phase 1: Concept design, including profile templates and navigation system.
  • Phase 2: Full layout of species profiles, maps, and technical diagrams.
  • Phase 3: Technical proofing, revisions, and preparation of print-ready files.
  • Target publishing date: June 5, 2026

Deliverables

  • Final print-ready PDF optimized for a pocket-sized format (e.g., 4″ x 6″) with necessary bleeds and crops.
  • A compressed, digital-friendly PDF for mobile reference by field officers.
  • Fully packaged source files (Adobe InDesign or Affinity).

Qualifications, skills, and experience

  • Experience in designing technical manuals or field guides.
  • Strong understanding of print production, specifically for durable or water-resistant materials suitable for outdoor use.
  • Ability to integrate local cultural context, including the correct application of local species names and regional trade data.
  • A clean, minimalist design aesthetic that prioritizes clarity, process, and functional utility over ornamentation.
