Conservation work doesn’t just happen in our forests or oceans. It must also happen in our cities via education.
Although an individual city dweller consumes less than a rural dweller, an entire city as a whole consumes more resources than less-populous rural units. And researchers predict that by 2030, cities will expand by 59,000 hectares, most likely into forests, biological hotspots, and coastlines.
As children grow, cities do too
The percentage of the world’s population living in cities is expected to grow to 66 percent by 2050. And as of 2003, the Philippine urban population had already reached 48 percent of the country’s total population.
If we don’t educate school children on the importance of biodiversity to our food and water sources, they, like many of us today, might lack the knowledge and empowerment to help grow their cities responsibly.
So let’s get BOW moving!
Fortunately, the Biodiversity on Wheels program or BOW, has already reached 13,000 students since its launch in April of 2012. But with millions of children in urban areas from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, there is more work to be done.
