The Philippines' first and oldest environmental conservation organization

HARIBON® Foundation for the Conservation of Natural Resources, Inc. ("HARIBON") has been at the forefront of protecting and restoring the country’s diverse ecosystems and communities for 50 years and counting.

Hatched as a Haring Ibon-inspired birdwatching society in 1972, HARIBON® gave birth to the Philippine environmental movement and took local citizens, advocates, and decision-makers from different sectors under its wing, helping incubate their own impactful conservation endeavors.

HARIBON® continues its legacy for the Haring Ibon and nature through sustainable projects that train, nurture, and empower many more Filipinos to be environmental leaders and guardians for countless generations of Philippine biodiversity to come.

History

Hatching interest and love for nature and conservation since 1972

The Philippine environmental movement took off in 1972, thanks to a small circle of birdwatchers with a shared passion for nature and the majestic Haring Ibon (Philippine eagle). Declining numbers of "indicator species" such as the Haring Ibon inspired the group to take birding several flights higher. The nature lovers then flocked together and embarked on a noble mission to save threatened Philippine wildlife and habitats as "The Haribon Society".

The Haribon Society launched its groundbreaking conservation journey with the Philippine Eagle Conservation Program (also known as the Monkey-Eating Eagle Conservation Program), where the organization conducted the earliest conservation efforts and crucial studies on the ecology of the Haring Ibon.

Because of its members’ devotion and commitment to support all Philippine ecosystems, The Haribon Society expanded into a full-fledged environmental conservation nonprofit in 1983. It now continues its legacy for nature as HARIBON® Foundation for the Conservation of Natural Resources, Inc.
