For. Miel Loria interviewing a resident of Brgy. Maunlad

The University of the Philippines, through UP Los Baños, manages two land grant areas in the southern portion of the Sierra Madre mountain ranges, namely the Laguna-Quezon Land Grant (LQLG) and the Laguna Land Grant (LLG), collectively referred to as the UP Sierra Madre Land Grants.

Haribon representatives For. Thaddy Martinez, For. Miel Loria, Luke Imbong, and Astrid Villanueva, together with Mr. Reynaldo Lorida-Farm Superintendent of the Land Grant Management Office (LGMO), devoted one whole day to gather information from dwellers of Brgy. Maunlad, who are considered “residents” of the LQLG.

The survey conducted aims to determine the sources of income of the residents and assess if their activities have direct impact on the destruction of the Sierra Madre Mountains, and moving forward, come up with possible ways to involve the representatives of Brgy. Maunlad in the process of restoring the forests in LQLG thru Haribon and UPLB, particularly the ROAD to 2020 movement of Haribon. ROAD stands from Rainforestation Organizations and Advocates.

The Haribon team was able to collect essential information, vital to the research study of the organization. One respondent said that made a mark, “Syempre, sino ba naman ang ayaw magkaisa ang dalawang grupo (Brgy. Maunlad and LGMO)? Para sa ikabubuti din naman namin yan e. Kailangan lang magkaintindihan, at maiayos ang lahat, para lahat makinabang sa kung ano mang desisyon ang mapapatupad”.

The Haribon team after the survey

After the findings have been summarized and analyzed, a project proposal will be designed by Haribon, which will then be submitted to LGMO. Hopefully, the outcome of the survey will benefit all parties, and achieve the ultimate goal of bringing back our forests.
