Multi-criteria Spatial Analysis of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) in the Philippines

The Philippines is one of the megadiverse countries in the world, with high diversity of species and high rate of endemism. However, rampant habitat destruction threatens the state of biodiversity in the country, thus a need for a systematic prioritization of biodiversity areas for protection. 

To provide a visual representation of quantitative data on KBAs that will serve as guide in examining biodiversity hotspots in the country this study used Geographic Information System technologies to analyze the Key Biodiversity Areas based on different criteria following the Important Bird Area Monitoring System framework of analyzing state, pressure, and response. This study also aims to exhibit the capabilities and usefulness of GIS as a tool for conservation scientists, practitioners and decision makers.
