Conservation from behind the lens

Oftentimes, conservation work is seen as something idyllic and detached from the bustle of most urban folk despite our reliance on the environment.

Oftentimes, conservation work is seen as something idyllic and detached from the bustle of most urban folk despite our reliance on the environment.

At the heart of the Metro are various pockets of nature where one can still marvel at various wildlife in the midst of the concrete. One can get behind the lens to bring the beauty of nature to a greater audience.

Wildlife photography is a great way to reconnect with the environment, and learn about species and habitats nestling in the urban jungle. Learning the behaviors and identifying characteristics of each species can be an adventure in itself, often gratifying when one finds their quarry and captures special moments in stills.

For instance, even documenting the secret lives of the ubiquitous ‘maya’ can serve both as practice and inspiration for other subjects in the future. This is true because one knows what food they like to eat, which birds look similar, how they choose nesting spots, and so on. These skills and knowledge will help in understanding the interconnection of various elements within an ecosystem.

Aside from capturing beautiful scenery and wildlife, nature photography also becomes an avenue for advocacy. Highlighting the plight of a species or area using compelling portraits and landscapes is a powerful tool as people can relate better to the cause with a visual appreciation.

Got a camera and love nature? Snap some shots and share it for all to see! Everyone needs a bit of the outdoors, especially in these troubled times when most are stuck in their homes.

We at Haribon encourage you to keep safe and explore the backyard or check the window for nearby birds and trees! Who knows? You just might find something extraordinary amidst the mundane urban life.
